Ghost Rarity Information

When exploring Dead Pixels Ghost rarity, keep in mind that ‘rarity’ can be looked at from many different perspectives…

One-of-One Rarity: First, all the Ghosts are “1/1”s, even independent of background layers—this means that if you removed all the ‘background’ layers from our Ghosts, all of them would still visually appear unique from any other Ghost. In this sense, all Ghosts have the same level of ‘rarity’.

Individual Layer Rarity: Layer ‘rarity’ information can be viewed on our Turtle Moon launchpad. It shows the percentage occurrences of each layer within the collection. With this type of rarity there is a caveat however: it is calculating ‘rarity’ based on currently minted Ghosts. This means that as we get closer to minting all 10,000, the ‘rarity’ certainty will increase. In the meantime however, they are subject to fluctuation. In general, fluctuation should not be very dramatic except for layers were we’ve published the total supplies from the outset (this leads to the section below). Example of potentially high layer rarity: Ghost 478

Published Rarity: We’ve stated from the very beginning that a number of layers will only appear X number of times. Currently those are the below. For these, final rarity can be certain even before all 10,000 are minted.

  1. 50 Golden Ghosts

  2. 100 ‘H-Hat’ Ghosts

  3. 1 ‘H-Hat + Golden’ Ghost

  4. 100 Zombie Ghosts

  5. 200 Onesie Ghosts (only 140 minted so far) - 25 variations (8 of each ‘animal’!)

  6. (There will be more in the future … 👀)

Eye-Of-The-Beholder Rarity: This is perhaps the most interesting type of rarity that is best exemplified by ‘Ghost 1’. First of all the ‘low number’ perception is something us humans love, but also ‘Ghost 1’ is the ‘cleanest’ Ghost, meaning it has the least embellishment, making it the purest form of our Ghost, and more likely to show up as a way to represent the project as a whole. While technically it has 0 ‘rare’ layers, the fact that it has 0 ‘rare’ layers makes it rare. There are other types of ‘eye-of-the-beholder’ rarities, for example if a certain Ghost resembles something from popular culture very closely, it might be quite sought-after even though—again—it doesn’t contain highly-rare layers. Another example of this is two semi-rare layers creating a visually-interesting phenomenon, for example with our ‘Phantom’ Ghosts, which would be Ghosts with translucent skin on any number of dark backgrounds, which makes them very visually different from all other Ghosts. Phantoms have also been tagged as such in the metadata for this unique property (see Phantom link above).

Earned Rarity: This type of rarity is related to ‘eye-of-the-beholder’ rarity in that it is perceived, however it is even more subjective and contextual. This type of rarity stems from things like lore, memes, inside-jokes, or events surrounding particular Ghosts. For example a founder completely accidentally (true story) sent one of the Ghosts to another random Ghost holder. That Ghost now has a story of having ‘escaped’. Additionally, if a Ghost owner is a talented writer, they may write a fantastic origin story for that Ghost which makes it more coveted, or a Ghost may have been owned by a prominent member of the Hedera/crypto community.
